Dalis sez –

Wow , have we really not emailed since mid December? We wrote one but the Holidays got in the way…..

Well!!!! Happy New Year. Mine was quiet and sweet. That’s so nice sometimes.

Work weekends will begin this weekend, see note from Rick below. Commitments are happening for the schedule. Lots of favorites and a few surprises. We will have a Memorial/Tribute for Allen Damron on Monday May 29.  More to come on all of that of course.

Songwriting School is getting very exciting this year. We have in addition to Rick Beresford and Dick Goodwin, Pat Pattison from the Berklee School of Music and Kye Fleming, one of the most awarded songwriters in country music and half of the team from www.songjourney.com. – See more about both below. Sign up for Songwriting School and meet these wonderful folks.

The Harmonica Workshop will be happening again for its second year. Gary Primich, Rob Roy Parnell and Gary Sapone have all agreed to come back as faculty. The dates for this one have been changed to the second midweek June 6 – 8. No skipping around to camps this year, ya’ll will be in the Kennedy Theater area with cover and places to work in small groups.

We are planning some Press Release events to announce this year’s schedule, Song Camp for youngsters 12 – 18 in July, Houston International/Kerrville Festival Stage again this year in April and many more wonderful Kerrville related programs. We’ll keep you updated as the details reveal themselves….

AND we actually had just a bit of rain the other day, need some more. Beautiful days and chilly nights have been the norm, we are indeed fortunate.

Hope to see you soon at a work weekend, a concert and /or fest in May and June.

Love,

   Dalis

WORK WEEKENDS STARTING THIS WEEKEND!

In January, we need to start clearing the decks.  We’ll start by cleaning up the Ranch, planting and trimming trees and, possibly, with the Board’s approvals, we can start dismantling the Threadgill shade roof (not the stage!).  We will also start the demolition of the oldest crafts booths.  Vehicle maintenance is a plus.  We are expecting nice weather this weekend, but in the event of rain, there is invariably work that can be done inside.  February will be spent on site prep and contracted work.  There is always a need for helpers as well as skilled professionals.

Part of the new arrangement will be a restructuring and reorganization of work crews and assignments to include volunteer food, expenses and entertainment.  Every weekend in March, April and May will have some kind of work party or festival prep to make this, our 35th festival, the most rewarding and stimulating ever.  The more energy we put in, the greater the return - for everyone!  (but you already know that.)

January 21-22  (This very weekend is the 25th anniversary of the demolition of the original main stage.)

     February 18-19 (alternate Feb 25-26)

Check the KerrStaff website calendar often for updates and specific projects.  Round up your friends and call your krew.  Bring cleanup tools, gloves, all-weather clothing and camping gear.  Carpool.  Come visit anytime and see the progress we’ve already made on the pavilion, the staff kitchen, the garden and the barn.  For more information on work weekend activities please contact Rick Wright at rick@kerrville-music.com

PS  We won’t be having open campfires ‘til the burn ban is lifted.  SeeYaSoon

DEADLINE FOR “MUSIC TO LIFE” ENTRIES APPROACHING!

Another songwriting contest scheduled for the 2006 Kerrville Folk Festival is the Public Domain Foundation’s MUSIC TO LIFE contest.  The Public Domain Foundation, in conjunction with the Kerrville Folk Festival, has now produced two MUSIC TO LIFE contests and concerts (2001 and 2003) and will conduct its third in 2006. This third MTL series once again seeks original or previously unpublished compositions dedicated to a social or political issue of concern. Finalists receive travel stipends and free passes to the Kerrville Folk Festival, and top award winners receive donations of up to $1,000 to the charitable organization(s) of their choice.  The MTL contest solicits and receives entries from songwriters domestically and abroad. Subsequently, MTL judges choose ten finalists to perform their compositions on June 3, 2006 at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Finalists typically each represent a different state from around the country and offer songs which speak to such issues as the emotion of children in foster care, the vitality of volunteers, and the brutal impact of war.  All MTL entries should be received by the PD Foundation by February 4, 2006.

The Public Domain Foundation promotes and facilitates the creation of cause-related music and furthers its impact upon issues and organizations of social and political justice.  To learn more about the Public Domain Foundation or to obtain MTL guidelines and an entry form for the 2006 MUSIC TO LIFE contest, visit www.pdfoundation.org/mtl/2006.cfm.
